Synopsis

After earthquakes and massive floods devastate civilization, scattered survivors struggle to rebuild human relationships within a ruined social order. A man separated from his family finds refuge with a woman who has also endured catastrophic loss. As hope and emotional attachment reappear, the collapse of modern society exposes both solidarity and moral uncertainty.

Critique

One of the earliest large scale disaster films, Deluge combines apocalyptic spectacle with intimate melodrama in ways that anticipated later catastrophe cinema. Its ambitious visual effects conveyed urban destruction with unusual intensity for the period, while the narrative reflects anxieties surrounding social breakdown during the interwar years. Beneath its sensational premise lies a sober reflection on survival, desire, and the fragility of civilized structures.
